There's a quite popular problem with Dell notebooks: the AC adapter is not recognized as Dell's and it is said to be "unknown" in Bios and after starting the machine. This results in CPU underclocking (a lot) and battery not charging at all (although notebook is usable).

Fortunately I found a genuine Dell power supply for laptops, it was in good condition and was very cheap. Unfortunately it was delivering a fixed 19.5 Volt, but a good amount of current (4.62 Amps). I searched the Internet for advises on how to modify such power supply, I found nothing about this particular type (PA-10 family from Dell).
The following happens when I plug in the adapter, and charges for some seconds, then disables: Byte 0x07 changes to 20, then E0 when it disables. Byte 0x3B changes to 30, then 31. Changing byte 0x06 sometimes brings up the QuickSet application's unknown adapter warning, for example at 01, 03, 09.
