I felt like the ending was really interesting largely because I thought the show was highlighting her ability to see Jacob’s darkness because of some darkness within herself. The discussions of empathy or lack of empathy coming from the parents was also interesting on this point.

Jacob was an 8th grader, not a master criminal, for one thing. That story he posted was damning, but could also be seen as his fantasy about the murder if he had been the killer, putting himself in the position of protagonist.
