I think if the story ended with L's death, it should go into a direction where Light has remorse for killing L, kicks off this huge internal conflict. Light had a very simple approach to good and evil: if you hurt people you are evil, and if you stop others from stopping evil you are evil as well.

Death Proof, especially the superior 90 minute version, is a good thriller, but Tarantino said on Robert Rodriguez' Directors show that it made them realize the audience wouldn't follow them wherever they go.
He just said that if he ends his career and Death Proof is the worst movie he made, then that’s a pretty good career. He might actually like it. But he does think it’s his worst.
