I'd like to make a good (or not evil) and a Powerful necromancer build. I picked up the VHuman Wizard (War Caster and when 4 level get Shadow Touched) and picked up the Animated Dead and the Summon Undead from 3 level spell, but other than this, I look like a normal wizard. Without looking like a necromancer!
However, starting off Cleric 2 and then going Wizard 18 (eventually) is a great option for versatility. Starting as a Cleric gives you armor and good utility (especially Turning any Undead that you can't control or handle), while investing primarily in Wizard is the best for Necromancy power.
Raising the dead is essentially a ritual as well, using no spell slots but taking time outside of combat to create your Thralls. You get the choice to pick from a set number of undead stat blocks unique to the book. This is capped by CR that increases at specific Necromancer levels (and further capped by having no more that your proficiency bonus).
