Vooruit (Dutch: Kunstencentrum Vooruit, [a] lit. 'Forward Arts Centre') is a historic complex in Ghent, Belgium. Vooruit was originally the festival and art centre of the Ghent-based labour movement, with a ballroom, cinema, theatre, etc. It is now mainly used for concerts and other cultural events.
Vooruit was founded by the Cooperative Vooruit. The cooperative was the backbone of Ghent’s socialist movement. Even before Vooruit’s creation in 1880, consumers and producers in Belgium and abroad had been experimenting for a while with cooperatives in order to more affordably provide for their material needs.
This bustling art centre is housed in the impressive 100-year-old monument De Vooruit. VIERNULVIER offers a variety of cultural events: theatre, dance, performance, festivals, lectures, concerts and parties.
Arts Centre VIERNULVIER - an official Flemish Arts Institution since 2017 - is the beating heart of the arts neighbourhood in Ghent, together with the nearby Minard Schouwburg, Ghent’s city library De Krook and Capitole. 350,000 visitors pass through our doors each year for performance art, music, literature, theatre, debate and so much more.
