The in game training isn't detailed enough for newcomers, and so unless you've played around with a few British, German and USA trains, a detailed manual is definitely helpful to read before getting into the game/route.
You can also access the World Editor at any time you are in the game and driving /operating a train (during a Scenario) by using the key combination Ctrl + E, then clicking the world icon in the upper-left panel.
