A NAFTA vehicle is exempt of ANY tariffs, duties or taxes when sold in Canada, the US or Mexico. You should call the Border Information Service (BIS) number listed at the end of this section to verify that the vehicle you intend to purchase is in fact duty free.
Cost of Importing a Car from Canada to the US Import Duty. Vehicles manufactured in the United States or Mexico are exempt from import duty under NAFTA. Vehicles manufactured outside the US or Mexico incur a 6.1% import duty based on the vehicle’s value on the bill of sale.
Personal Use Exemption: If you are a Canadian resident returning from abroad or an immigrant settling in Canada, you may be eligible for a personal use exemption. Under this program, you can import your vehicle duty-free if it was owned, possessed, and used abroad for at least six months prior to your arrival.
