In numerous other witch trials, witches were accused of cursing people by sticking pins into poppets, and by casting various spells. Curses often are written or publicly proclaimed to maximize their effect upon the victim. Many curses, however, are done in secret magical rituals.
Spells. The Killing Curse. One of the three Unforgivable Curses outlawed under wizarding law, Avada Kedavra kills the victim on impact, instantaneously and painlessly, usually with a blinding flash of green light. There is no way to block the spell, and there is no counter-curse - it can only be dodged.
Avada Kedavra is most easily identified because of the bright green lights that flash from the wand when used. Harry Potter described being hit with the curse as an ironclad punch. Most victims fall dead, while others might be pitched from a rooftop or thrown backward because of the impact.
