What is cumulative frequency? Cumulative frequency is the running total of frequencies in a frequency distribution. For example, the frequency distribution table below shows the individual frequencies for each month and the cumulative frequencies for each month.
Cumulative frequencies describe a sort of ‘running total’ of frequencies in a frequency distribution. You will find cumulative frequencies in many real-world situations, since we often need to collect data for a larger study by conducting several smaller studies.
A cumulative frequency is the sum of the observations in a class (grouping of values, e.g. 0-5 year olds, 6-10 year olds, etc.) and all of the observations in the classes below it. It is an extension of a frequency distribution.
