The Fiber Determination using Scharrer reagent consists in boiling the sample with a mixture of acetic acid, nitric acid and trichloroacetic acid, followed by the separation and washing of the insoluble residue on a filter crucible.
Crude fibre is the organic residue, which remains after the food sample has been treated with petroleum ether, boiling dilute sulphuric acid, dilute sodium hydroxide solution and alcohol under the standardized conditions. The crude fibre consists largely of cellulose together with a little lignin.
1.1.2 Procedure Examine the test sample for its general condition, such as appearance: freedom from moulds, insect infestation, off odour, poisonous and deleterious matter.
The crude fiber method was developed to estimate indigestible carbohydrate in animal feeds. Forage quality is a direct reflection of essential nutrient content and availability to the consuming animals and generally
7.10 Determination of crude fibre – Muslin cloth method Principle The feed sample is subjected to acid digestion followed by alkali digestion and the remaining residue is weighed and ashed. The loss of weight after ashing is the crude fibre content of the feed. Apparatus • Lipless beaker 600 ml capacity • Condensing flask
Crude fiber is determined gravimetrically after chemical digestion and solubilization of other materials present. The fiber residue weight is then corrected for ash content after ignition. The method is applicable to corn and other grains, feedstuffs containing vegetable materials, flours and meals.
This method determines crude fiber which is the organic residue remaining after digesting with 0.255N H2SO4 and 0.313N NaOH. The compounds removed are predominantly protein, sugar, starch, lipids and portions of both the structural carbohydrates and lignin.
