I tend to use torrents mainly and when I do use direct download I rarely have problems with session failures. A download manager can be helpful when dealing with a lot of file parts which is common for large games on free download hosts, but I don't need to do that very often if it all.

Depends a bit on what sort of features you need, but JDownloader has been my go-to. I like Free Download Manager for being lightweight, multiplatform and dark, although it's proprietary and still doesn't support pasting multiple links at once. Free download manager.
