If there is something troubling about when, how, or why the death occurred, or if something occurs after the death that is troubling, a bereaved person’s attention can be captured, diverting them from coming to terms with the death and leaving them stuck in acute grief.
Coping with the death of an adult, such as a spouse, parent, sibling, other family member or close friend, presents many challenges. When a person in your life dies, you are likely to experience intense grief and an array of physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral reactions.
How the person died Your response to an unanticipated death – a sudden heart attack, an accident, and act of violence – may be very different from the grief you feel when someone you love dies after a long illness. In the latter case, you may experience anticipatory grief, which occurs before the person’s death.
