In Steam, go to Settings then Controller, and finally, Desktop Configuration. You can assign the mouse to any of the joysticks and the clicks or Keyboard keys to any of the buttons (like the Dpad to be the arrow keys), it works just like a mouse and keyboard. I've used steam link for a few years. I now hate steam and hate big picture even more.
