21 lut 2024 · What is a congenital liar? A congenital liar is someone who chronically lies from early childhood into adulthood. They may have grown up in environments where lying was necessary or experienced trauma that led to their lying behavior.
HIGHLIGHTS. Pathological lying exists in a small percentage of people, for whom it causes significant distress, impaired func-tioning, and danger. Pathological lying, distinct from normative lying and prolific lying, has a prevalence of 8%–13%. Evidence supports establishing pathological as a diag-nostic entity.
Pathological lying is strictly internal. The difference between borderline personality disorder (BPD) and pathological liars is that BPD patients try to cope with their fear of abandonment, mistreatment, or rejection by making empty threats of suicide or false accusations of abandonment.
Scholars have traditionally discussed deception in two categorical dimensions: ethics and normativity. The majority of deception litera-ture has discussed the normative aspects of lying, such as the prevalence and frequency of lying within the general population (see Levine, 2014b, 2020; Vrij, 2008).
