Most of these serious complications can be treated with medicines or further surgery. There is a very small risk – around 1 in 1,000 – of permanent sight loss in the treated eye as a direct result of the operation.
3 maj 2023 · Serious complications are rare among the 4 million U.S. patients with cataracts who have surgery each year. Although the recovery process is different for everyone, there are some issues that people commonly encounter in the days after surgery, as the eyes heal.
watering. blurred vision. double vision. a red or bloodshot eye. These side effects usually improve within a few days, but it can take 4 to 6 weeks to recover fully. If you need new glasses, you will not be able to order them until your eye has completely healed, usually after 6 weeks.
Risks during surgery. Some of the possible complications during surgery include: bleeding inside the eye, though this happens in less than 1 in 1,000 people; damage to other structures of the eye (such as the capsule surrounding the lens) which can sometimes affect your vision
The most common complication after cataract surgery is something called posterior capsule opacification (PCO). This is when your lens capsule, which holds the lens in place, becomes cloudy, similar to having a cataract again. It can happen weeks, months or even years after your cataract surgery.
Possible complications during the operation. Tearing of the back part of the lens capsule with disturbance of the gel inside the eye that may sometimes result in reduced vision. Loss of all or part of the cataract into the back of the eye requiring a further operation under general anaesthetic. Bleeding inside the eye.
Cataracts can worsen due to things like poor diet, smoking, UV light from the sun and poorly controlled diabetes. More of what you can do to slow down development of cataracts is on pages 6 and 7. There are no medicines that can slow down cataracts.
