30 cze 2022 · There are two species of loons that can be spotted in Michigan: the Red-throated Loon and the Common Loon. Red-throated loons can be only seen migrating through Michigan while the Common loons spend summers in the state.
The Common loon is a large, heavy-bodied bird, averaging 32 inches (81.3 cm) in length, with a wingspan of about 5 feet (1.5 m). In breeding plumage, its head and dagger-like bill are dark, its breast white, and its back is a distinctive black and white checkerboard pattern.
We are proud of our Loon heritage at Elk Lake, Lake Skegemog and the Torch River. The Common Loon is incorporated into ESLA’s logo. The early morning and early evening voices of loons are emblematic music for our waters.
The eerie calls of Common Loons echo across clear lakes of the northern wilderness. Summer adults are regally patterned in black and white. In winter, they are plain gray above and white below, and you’ll find them close to shore on most seacoasts and a good many inland reservoirs and lakes.
Over 300 volunteer Loon Rangers protect and monitor loons and their habitat on specific lakes in Michigan. They have been recruited from people living on, summering at, or regularly visiting lakes reported as nesting lakes for loons.
The loons’ hauntingly beautiful voice is matched by its striking plumage, with a collar of white stripes and intricate patterns of white and black feathers on wings and back. The loon wanders endlessly. It summers on northern lakes and migrates in a perilous journey to the seacoast each fall.
