15 paź 2024 · According to EarthSky website, an anti-tail is sometimes called an illusion. But it’s real and appears when, as on October 13-15, Earth is crossing the comet’s orbital plane. The website also said, the anti-tail reveals the comet’s past path, or where it has already traveled through space.
An antitail is an apparent spike projecting from a comet 's coma which seems to go towards the Sun, and thus geometrically opposite to the other tails: the ion tail and the dust tail. Despite a common misunderstanding, this phenomenon is not an optical illusion. The antitail consists of larger dust particles left behind by the comet.
Comet Lulin (official designation C/2007 N3 (Lulin), Traditional Chinese:鹿林彗星) is a non-periodic comet. It was discovered by Ye Quanzhi and Lin Chi-Sheng from Lulin Observatory .
C/2007 N3 (Lulin) R. Ligustri obtained this image on 2009 February 6, using an 11-cm refractor and an STL11000 CCD camera at a remote-controlled telescope in New Mexico (USA). This is a composite image using separate 60-second exposures with G and R filters, a 120-second exposure with a B filter, and a 180-second exposure with an L filter.
