8 paź 2023 · Colles fractures are very common extra-articular fractures of the distal radius that occur as the result of a fall onto an outstretched hand. They consist of a fracture of the distal radial metaphyseal region with dorsal angulation and impaction, but without the involvement of the articular surface.
The term Colles fracture is classically used to describe a fracture at the distal end of the radius, at its cortico-cancellous junction. However, the term now tends to be used loosely to describe any fracture of the distal radius, with or without involvement of the ulna, that has dorsal displacement of the fracture fragments.
One of these eponyms is the Colles fracture, which describes an extra-articular distal metaphyseal fracture of the radius with dorsal displacement. Although Colles fractures are extremely common, a bilateral presentation has been reported to be present in <1% of cases 1.

30 paź 2023 · Colles fracture typically occurs when a person falls and uses a pronated hand and outstretched arm to try to break the fall. In this position, the wrist is usually at 40-90° in dorsiflexion. The pressure from the fall over-extends the hand and breaks the radius just above the wrist.
