Point of care coagulation analyzers (e.g., IDEXX Coag Dx) have been evaluated for dogs and cats. In cases of emergency the activated clotting time (ACT) can be determined. ACT tubes contain diatomaceous earth to act as contact activator for FXII (intrinsic system).

The PT is a unitized coagulation test intended for in vitro use in performing a quantitative, one-stage prothrombin time. The PT test is performed using fresh canine, feline, or equine whole blood. This test is to be used with the Coag Dx* Analyzer and is also compatible with the SCA2000* Coagulation Analyzer.
Interpretation. Lip bleeding time is expected to be prolonged in patients with severe acquired or inherited platelet dysfunction or severe von Willebrand disease. There is a variable response in dogs with DIC or mild forms of vWD. Dogs with even severe coagulation factor deficiencies usually have normal lip bleeding time.
