The Cleveland-class was a group of light cruisers built for the United States Navy during World War II. They were the most numerous class of light cruisers ever built. Fifty-two were ordered, and 36 were completed, 27 as cruisers and nine as the Independence -class of light aircraft carriers.

At the Battle off Cape Engano on 24/25 October the ship was a part of TF34 when the carrier Chiyoda, crippled by aircraft, was finished off by Mobile and her consorts (Santa Fe, New Orleans and Wichita, together with destroyers).
From 8 June to 12 August, Cleveland participated in the Marianas operation. On 24 July, during the invasion of Tinian, Cleveland came to the aid of the destroyer Norman Scott. Norman Scott was hit six times within a few seconds by shore batteries.
