Public Bath Houses Initiative. At the height of the progressive hygiene movement, dozens of public bath houses were scattered throughout Pittsburgh's many neighborhoods. Today, only four remain (one of which is the last functioning bath house in Pennsylvania).

Prominent Black abolitionist John Bathan Vashon opened Pittsburgh’s first public bathhouse near this location in 1834. Until Vashon’s death nearly twenty years later, the “City Baths” catered to prominent white and Black Pittsburghers alike.
The bath house today remains the only continuously functioning bathhouse in Pittsburgh and in Pennsylvania. Address: 38 S 10th Street. Status: Listed on the City Register in 2017.
