Flood risk in the City of Moorhead is largely the result of being located next to the Red River of the North and the flat topography of its valley. The City's floodplain management goals are to minimize risk to life, health, safety, commerce, and governmental services and to avoid extreme public expenditures and impairment to the tax base.

This GIS Mapping Application provides information on the Red River Flood stage levels that may affect properties and structures in the City of Moorhead. The 1/2 foot stages were derived from depth grids generated by Houston Engineering from the LiDAR data acquired during the May 2017 imagery\LiDAR project.
The City of Moorhead continues to monitor National Weather Service flood forecasts and is implementing flood protection protocols. The temperatures and amount of precipitation received in the upcoming days and weeks will affect future flood forecasts.

The 1 foot contours have been generated from LiDAR data gathered in early May of 2020. In areas with no permanent levees, emergency levees are assumed to be in place for areas shown as protected by levees. Close.
