Even after the southern part of the country became independent South Sudan in 2011, the population of Sudan has continued to grow. The gender balance overall is fairly even.
Sudan was embroiled in two prolonged civil wars during most of the remainder of the 20th century. These conflicts were rooted in northern economic, political, and social domination of largely non-Muslim, non-Arab southern Sudanese. The first civil war ended in 1972 but broke out again in 1983.
Sudan has a population of 50.4 million people (in 2024 est.), Capital city is Khartoum, largest city is Omdurman, Sudan's main port is Port Sudan. The Sudanese government evacuated to Port Sudan due to an ongoing battle for Khartoum.
