I actually think there are more than 2 apartments on each floor. I think there's 4. At one point, Sheldon went out his window and crawled to Leonard's, so I think the wall behind Leonard's bed would more likely be where Sheldon's closet is depicted. There isn't a window in Penny's kitchen.

So the question more is: are there other instances where characters are seen walking up four (or perhaps more) flights?
