The traditional Chinese calendar (traditional Chinese: 農曆; simplified Chinese: 农历; lit. 'agricultural calendar'; traditional Chinese: 陰曆; simplified Chinese: 阴历; lit. 'lunar calendar'), is a lunisolar calendar dating from the Han dynasty that combines solar, lunar, and other cycles for various social and agricultural purposes.
The Chinese calendar has 12 or 13 lunar months per year, and is about 20 to 50 days behind the Gregorian calendar. It's used to determine the dates of traditional Chinese festivals , like Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn.
In the Chinese lunar calendar, the first month is traditionally called Zheng Yue (the first month, not January) while the 11th month and the 12th month are called Dong Yue (eleventh month) and La Yue (end-of-year month) respectively; however, Dong Yue is rarely used at present.
