I use Chessex plastic hex bases similar to the IWM ones but in plastic. I also use many different Litko wood bases. Unless the mini has a "base" molded into it, the minis get put on a Litko one since they have a flat top and are much easier to get a mini onto them.
I've found the Chessex bases very useful for the smaller BattleTech models which aren't top heavy, and that don't require all of the weight of an all metal IWM base. For instance I've used these on my Urbanmech and Griffin Mech models, since both aren't very heavy at all.
Hexes are 21/22 x 28. The width alternates between 21 and 22 hexes, so no play space is wasted. Battlemat is a trademark of Chessex. Chessex has a trusted history of manufacturing high quality dice and gaming accessories at an affordable price.

If you are looking for bases beyond the ones that come with the mechs, I would highly recommend chessex hex bases (the are just a touch smaller, but are very inexpensive ($9 usd for 50 of them).
