- Our Story
The story of Chateau Souverain begins in 1944 when J. Leland "Lee" Stewart harvested his first crop of grapes from Howell Mountain vineyard in Napa Valley. In the years that followed, Stewart used innovation, meticulous standards and his natural gift for winemaking to establish Souverain as one of the great California wineries.
Over a period of 10 years, Chateau Souverain wins 93 medals at the California State Fair. 1970 Chateau Souverain crafts a series of benchmark Cabernets that help put Napa on the map (examples are on display at the wine museum at the CIA Graystone).
Chateau Souverain is a wine producer based in California's Alexander Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area). The estate specializes in single-variety wines sourced largely from Sonoma County's Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley, as well as North Coast appellations.
The main red varieties that call the Napa Wine Region home are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. They are often ageworthy, with some earning consistently high ratings in our Napa Wine Reviews.
