know formulae for constant velocity and constant acceleration. be able to solve problems on motion with constant velocity and constant acceleration, including problems involving several such stages. understand what is meant by the terms ‘average speed’ and ‘average velocity’. 1.1 Motion with constant velocity. y of 100 paces per minute due east. Wh
In everyday conversation we usually talk about velocity in kilometres per hour (km/h), but need to use metres per second in physics formulas. You can convert km/h to m/s by dividing by 3.6 (this is an exact value and has an infinite number of sig digs). The answer from Example 5 would be 29.4m/s.
km/h in a time of 10.0 s. Compare (a) the average acceleration; (b) instantaneous acceleration; and (c) total distance traveled for the two cars. Figure 2-19. Solution: a. Average acceleration is the same; both have the same change in speed over the same time. b. Car
The SI unit for velocity is meters per second or m/s, but many other units, such as km/h, mi/h (also written as mph), and cm/s, are in common use. Suppose, for example, an airplane passenger took 5 seconds to move −4 m (the negative sign indicates that displacement is toward the back of the plane).
(note: on many different equation sheets x is substituted by d for displacement) Variables (mks unit) Δy or y : change in position or displacement (m) in the y axis Δv : change in velocity (m/s) iy: initial Y axis velocity (m/s) V fy: final Y axis velocity (m/s) g : acceleration due to gravity (m/s )
