We use cm when we want to measure the length of a one dimensional object. Cm can be used when finding perimeter, or when finding the length of a line. cm$^2$ is used when we want to find the specific area of something. Why cm$^2$? Let's say we want to find the area of a rectangle that is $8$cm long and $7$cm wide.
