Village Vanguard. 100% the most legendary club in NYC, with many classic albums recorded in that room. Birdland, the Blue Note, Smalls etc are fine, but the Vanguard is hallowed ground. Make sure to listen to some of the live albums before you go - you'll be able to recognize the acoustics, and especially the sound of the applause.
