21 mar 2023 · Last few weeks I haven't really paid attention to the Cecropia tree, but yesterday noticed it was holding a ton more fruit and one that appeared ripe (yellow stalk, gummy-worm texture). Picked it this morning and saw the ants were already enjoying the sweet juices; to my surprise it tasted kind of like watery BBQ sauce.
These fruits, called achenes (like the seeds on the outside of a strawberry), form cylindrical fruit clusters 4-6 in. (10-15 cm) long. When on the tree, Cecropia fruits look like greenish-yellow fingers reaching up to the sky (Fig. 23).
Fruits take about 4 months to ripen after emergence of the inflorescence. The seeds are dispersed by animals, usually bats and birds, but they are also water-dispersed. In tropical America, many Cecropia species, including Cecropia peltata , are associated with ants of the genus Azteca .
