However, stillbirths do occur more often to women in certain racial or ethnic groups. In 2021, stillbirth occurred among non-Hispanic Black women two times more often than non-Hispanic Asian or Pacific Islander and White women. 2

Knowledge about the potential causes of stillbirth can be used to develop recommendations, policies, and services to help prevent stillbirth.
Around 1.9 million stillbirths – babies born with no sign of life at 28 weeks of pregnancy or later – occurred worldwide in 2021. Many of these might have been prevented with proper care. According to the latest data, the global stillbirth rate last year was 13.9 stillbirths per 1,000 total births.
Figure 2 shows trends in the number of pregnancies, live births, abortions, and pregnancy losses for 2010–2019. The overall pregnancy rate (the estimated number of pregnancies per 1,000 females aged 15–44) was 97.3 in 2010, declining by 12% to 85.6 in 2019 (Table A).
