In addition, we focus on gathering data to better understand the extent of maternal and infant morbidity, and behaviors and conditions that can affect reproductive health.

Around 1.9 million stillbirths – babies born with no sign of life at 28 weeks of pregnancy or later – occurred worldwide in 2021. Many of these might have been prevented with proper care. According to the latest data, the global stillbirth rate last year was 13.9 stillbirths per 1,000 total births.

Where possible, a cause of death for each stillbirth should be recorded using the international form of Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) (see Annex 2). WHO now recommends that this form is used for deaths at all ages, including stillbirths (16).
