Dietary therapy. The ideal diet for cats with chronic small bowel diarrhea is based on a highly digestible single protein and carbohydrate source that is gluten and lactose free. There are a limited number of commercial “hypoallergenic” diets currently available that fulfill these requirements.
Diarrhea caused by Salmonella or Campylobacter should be considered in kittens living in high density environments, those fed raw meat diets, and those with systemic illness (fever, dehydration, leukocytosis). Antibiotics are often injudiciously administered without a valid diagnosis.

Many feline health conditions may manifest themselves in diarrhea—the abnormally frequent passage of watery, sometimes oddly colored (gray or yellow), and uncharacteristically foul smelling stools.
