It is defined as follows: maximum diameter of the heart / maximum diameter of the chest A normal measurement should be less than 0.5. A number > 0.5 may suggest enlargement of the heart chamber size.
Cardiomegaly means enlargement of the heart. The definition is when the transverse diameter of the cardiac silhouette is greater than or equal to 50% of the transverse diameter of the chest (increased cardiothoracic ratio) on a posterior-anterior projection of a chest radiograph or a computed tomography.
Potential causes of Enlargement of the Cardiac Silhouette include: a) Cardiac chamber (s) (atria, ventricles) – related to valvular disease or cardiomyopathy (ischemic, dilated), congenital heart anomalies, other. b) Pericardium – pericardial effusion, pericardial tumor. c) Epicardial – fat, tumor. d) Anterior Mediastinal mass.
