I prefer a mage Garret Hawke. Since all the promotion materials are with him and DAI defaults to him, I feel like that's kind of canon. There isn't a real canon, though, that Bioware confirmed, as far as I know. That said, I enjoy playing as a mage in DA2.
My canon is a rogue Hawke because it's a class that allows Hawke to be in the middle of some of the conflicts (their family upbringing notwithstanding). It's also the everyman's class. They're not a mighty warrior or a mysterious mage.

It is really hard to head-canon a Hawke that would go pro-templar when their sister is alive. Unless you play it that they hated each other. If Bethany is dead Hawke can draw their own conclusions about the abuse of magic without family ties holding them back.
