Tracheal collapse is most common in small breed dogs. Tracheal collapse can be dynamic (varying with respiration) or fixed (resulting from malformation). Diagnosis is typically based on history, physical examination, and imaging. Medical treatments include cough suppressants, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics.
While there is no cure for tracheal collapse, many dogs, especially those with mild disease, will respond well to medical management. Some individuals may eventually stop responding to medical treatment and require surgery or other interventions.
