Metronidazole is an antibiotic especially effective against anaerobic infections. In addition, it has anti-inflammatory properties in the large intestine and is an effective anti-diarrhea medication. It is also an effective antibiotic against certain protozoal infections, especially Giardia.

Metronidazole (brand name Flagyl®) is an antibacterial and antiprotozoal agent used in the treatment of certain anaerobic bacterial and protozoal infections, such as those caused by Giardia and Trichomonas. It is often used to treat diarrhea and other intestinal problems.
Dosage. Dogs: 10-25 milligrams per kilogram by mouth or intravenously every 8-12 hours. Cats: 10-25 milligrams per kilogram by mouth or intravenously every 12-24 hours. Horses: 10-25 milligrams per kilogram by mouth or intravenously every 8-12 hours.
The recommended dose is 50 mg metronidazole per kg body weight per day, for 5-7 days. The daily dose may be divided equally for twice daily administration (i.e. 25 mg/kg body weight twice daily).
