After searching everywhere for something that would work on my Pontiac, and reading about needing to buy a Tech2 for a couple grand, then a Candi module, and maybe the MDI interface, and a software subscription, I thought I was out of luck or out 4 grand.
Mongoose generally only works with newer cars, there's some magic going on with the candi module that is slowly being deduced but I'd say it's far from common knowledge. TIS2000 and GlobalTIS use serial to give security access to the tech 2 however it can also be used to apply firmware updates and reflash the ecu through the tech 2.

OP • 4 yr. ago. Here are the screenshots from the Tech 2 showing the 148 version and the release notes warning not to use CANdi for vehicles older than 2005. The line below that, which I didn't scroll far enough to show, reads "Hardware can be destroyed".
