You can always change the sample set for a whole part by selecting all notes and changing it to the desired sample set or you can add an inherited point (green line) and change the whole part to the selected sample set until the next inherited point.

For example, for 4k, it would look something like: ColumnSpacing: 10,10,10
Some skins replicate the Stepmania style if you like. Just search online but be aware that skins are community made so it can have to try a few ones before finding something you like. Alternatively you can try playing on osu!lazer (new osu client) which has a better interface for mania.
how do you change the width of the highways in osu!mania? i looked in the skin.ini and couldn't find anything of the story in there. You're looking for ColumnWidth. You have to input the value for each lane individually so ColumnWidth: 40, 60, 60, 40 for 4k with 40 on the sides with 60 on the center lanes.
With osutrainer you can change the speed of a map to anything. If a pattern is just slightly too challenging then setting the map to 0.9x speed in osutrainer can be a good way of practicing that pattern.

Now you just need to add the hitsound you wish! You can choose between Finish, Whistle and Clap.
