The Big Pine Lakes hike can be completed as epic day hike, but is best experienced as a 2-4 day backpacking trip. Set up a lakeside base camp, then swim, fish, peak bag, or hike, taking the time to fully immerse yourself in the dramatic Sierra Nevada scenery.
The two main campgrounds at the base of the trail are Big Pine Creek Campground and Big Pine Canyon. They are family-friendly and great as a base for exploring this area. If you stay there, you could easily walk to the trailhead early in the morning.
