8 lip 2013 · If you want to drive further out west, head out to Oregon, Illinois area, and visit the Nachusa Grasslands. In the SW corner of the park are a ton of Opuntia growing. Those are just a few areas that I can think of, but there are many places in IL to observe native cacti growing.

Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia humifusa) is the only cactus that is widespread in the eastern United States. It forms in low, wide mounds and thrives in full sun in dry, sandy, well-drained soil. The flat, fleshy, green pads are covered with barbed thistles, and in the spring it produces bright yellow flowers often with red centers.
