You read right, aim down the sights. Why? It's easier to align your shotgun for the one shot kill more accurately when ADSing. I find the hipfiring on the 1887 to be more inaccurate than aiming down the sights at close range and that it often results in an absurd hitmarker, i.e. death.

The 1887 is super easy to target with because you have the long, straight barrel to help you aim. Headshots are a breeze with this and get you constant OHKs from range. You can get more of these by going ADS over hipfire.
