8 kwi 2021 · Although African-American soldiers have fought in every American war, the “Buffalo Soldiers” have a unique place in history and memory. These Buffalo Soldiers, despite racial discrimination, persevered to be a great credit to both the American people and the United States.
One important job for the Buffalo Soldiers was to draw maps of the places they scouted. They mapped important features such as mountains, hills, canyons, forests, and rivers. This was important because Texas is such a big state and people moving here needed to know where they were going.
From 1866 to the early 1890s, Buffalo Soldier units served at a variety of posts in Texas, the Southwest and the Great Plains. Records indicate that approximately 5,000 black soldiers, comprising 10 percent of the U.S. Army, served on America’s frontier from 1866 to 1891.
The Buffalo Soldiers went to American frontier to keep peace between the American Indians and settlers moving west. In 1869, Congress consolidated the black infantry regiments into the 24th and 25th U.S. Infantry.
