The BCD-1 ($2500 USD) is a Red Book-only player. It can read your CD-Rs, but don't put your hybrid SACDs into the BCD-1 and expect to hear anything more than the PCM stereo layer. I contacted James Tanner, vice president at Bryston, and asked him about his company's decision to build a CD player with no provisions for high-resolution formats.
My primary source has been a BDP-1/BDA-1 combo. But for large CD box sets (that I don't bother ripping), I still enjoy BCD-1. As far as I know, there's been only one main version of BCD-1. And I would buy a second-hand BCD-1 if I had the cash, and the price was right, for a secondary system.
The BCD-1 is truly a heavy weight CD lifter and its actual weight in pounds tells the story of 'why' that is. Power supply. Like Bryston's amplifiers and preamps, the BCD-1 delivers the goods because it starts out with lots of pure power right off the bat.

While fairly entry-level, this CD player definitely surpassed my expectations. The music was clean and transparent, with focused and engaging dynamics. However, I was a bit confused when I realized it did not support SACD format.
I have since read a few reviews of the with one summing up that the BCD-1 will be regarded, over time, in the same light as the legendary Linn LP12 turntable, not a bad reccomendation. Has anyone else heard the BCD-1 or compared directly against the CD37 or any other cd player, I'd be interested in any views.
