Typically found in and around bodies of water. Head is only slightly wider than neck, keeled scales, round pupils. Stocky body with an irregular pattern of wide black bands fading to brown and shades of orange or yellow.

A nocturnal hunter, N. fasciata spends the day resting in the vegetation along the water's edge or hides deep in rodent burrows along the bank. Many species of Nerodia are suspected of being venomous cottonmouths (Agisktrodon piscivorus) but the behavior of the two snakes is tremendously different.
