Many species of Nerodia are suspected of being venomous cottonmouths (Agisktrodon piscivorus) but the behavior of the two snakes is tremendously different. Cottonmouths move much more slowly in the water, often keeping their entire body afloat.

Cottonmouths are the ONLY venomous water snake in Texas. Be on the lookout for these water snakes near swamps, marshes, ponds, and slow-moving streams and rivers, as well as flooded fields and drainage ditches.
NOT venomous but may bite if harassed. Typically found in and around bodies of water. Head is only slightly wider than neck, keeled scales, round pupils. Stocky body with an irregular pattern of wide black bands fading to brown and shades of orange or yellow.
