29 maj 2024 · Cottonmouths are the only venomous water snakes in North America! These snakes are incredibly strong swimmers and are considered semi-aquatic. They can thrive in and outside of water. Cottonmouths can be found in a lot of different states in America. They’re most common throughout the southeastern, southern, and central parts of the United States.
A nocturnal hunter, N. fasciata spends the day resting in the vegetation along the water's edge or hides deep in rodent burrows along the bank. Many species of Nerodia are suspected of being venomous cottonmouths (Agisktrodon piscivorus) but the behavior of the two snakes is tremendously different.
NOT venomous but may bite if harassed. Typically found in and around bodies of water. Head is only slightly wider than neck, keeled scales, round pupils. Stocky body with an irregular pattern of wide black bands fading to brown and shades of orange or yellow.
Cottonmouths are the ONLY venomous water snake in Texas. Be on the lookout for these water snakes near swamps, marshes, ponds, and slow-moving streams and rivers, as well as flooded fields and drainage ditches.
