The "latching" function (green light on 2 seconds, off 2 seconds) is to identify which unit(s) were triggered AFTER the alarm turned itself off. We had the same issue multiple times in the middle of the night- I just go room to room and find the flashing green unit, disconnected it, shop vac every crevice on the unit, & reinstall.
