PREHISTORY OF MASBATE. The island of Masbate was formed out of volcanic and other rocks over one hundred million years ago, together with the other islands of the Philippines. At this time man and even many of the lower animals, had not yet appeared upon the earth.

Masbate History. When Captain Luis Enriquez de Guzman anchored on the shores of Masbate in 1569, he found tiny settlements spread along the coasts engaged in a flourishing trade with China.

Therefore, it is believed that people settled in the area long before the Spaniards arrived in the Philippines. It is not known how the name Masbate came to be.
